About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past and Present
Set in the Ravenswood neighborhood of Indianapolis, Riverwood Park spans 11.6 acres of community space. It joined the Indy Parks family in 2006, but its story began much earlier - this land once housed White River Elementary School, which later transformed into Phoenix School before becoming the park we know today.
Where Play Happens
Riverwood's playground is a popular attraction for children. With multiple slides, swings, bridges, firemen poles, monkey bars, and a climbing wall, there's something to challenge every little adventurer. The design works well for families looking for a place where their children can be active.
When summer temperatures rise, the adjacent splash pad provides welcome relief. Operating from Memorial Day through Labor Day, it's one of the first water features to open in the area - helpful for those early hot days.
Feel like being active? The expansive grassy field accommodates impromptu soccer matches and football games for both casual players and organized teams. If basketball is more your speed, head over to the basketball courts for a quick game.
A paved walking trail loops around the park, ideal for morning jogs, evening strolls, or teaching the little ones to ride their bikes in a safe environment.
Take a Breather
Need to refuel after all that play? The shaded picnic shelter houses about 6-9 tables, creating a wonderful spot for family lunches, birthday celebrations, or just enjoying a sandwich while the kids play nearby. You can find additional picnic tables scattered across the grounds, but the playground area could use a few more seating options.
The park also functions as home turf for Bishop Chatard High School's lacrosse and soccer teams, adding to its community significance.
Good to Know Before You Go
If you're planning a summer visit, come prepared - the playground and splash pad areas have limited shade. The restrooms (open seasonally) and drinking fountains are located near the basketball court, a bit of a trek from the play areas, so plan accordingly if you're bringing young children.
Four-legged family members are welcome, but keep them leashed. During popular times, parking spaces fill up quickly, so you might want to arrive early.
What makes Riverwood special is its genuine neighborhood feel - rarely overcrowded and always welcoming. It's that perfect middle-ground park: big enough to offer plenty of activities but small enough to maintain its community charm.
