About the Location
A Bit of Background
Tucked away in southeast Indianapolis, Sandorf Park has been a community gathering spot since 1959. Spanning 6.7 acres right next to Frederick Douglass IPS School 19, this nearby retreat underwent a major facelift in late 2020. The renovation wasn't just cosmetic - it tackled environmental issues from the park's previous life as a landfill while giving the whole space a modern refresh.
Not Your Average Playground
If you're looking for a place where all kids can play together, Sandorf's playground is something special. The 20-foot play structure is fully accessible for children with disabilities, and there are thoughtful sensory-based play elements designed with kids on the autism spectrum in mind. The inclusive design shows consideration for visitors of all abilities.
You won't find the standard cookie-cutter equipment here either. The playground boasts extensive climbing ropes, multiple slides to zoom down, and a smaller section where the little ones can play safely. One of our favorite touches? The parent-child swings that let adults and babies sway together - great for bonding time with the smallest park-goers.
For the Active Types
Sandorf Park offers several options for outdoor sports activities. It houses Indianapolis's first bicycle pump track (a continuous circuit of rollers and banked turns) and a versatile multisport court that adapts for basketball, futsal, volleyball, or pickleball depending on what you're in the mood for.
Skateboarders haven't been forgotten - the small skate park attracts both beginners and those with more tricks up their sleeves. Traditional sports are well-represented too, with two basketball courts, tennis courts, and a multipurpose field large enough for regulation soccer games. Walking paths wind within the grounds, well-suited for your daily steps or a leisurely weekend stroll.
Bringing People Together
The heart of Sandorf might be its community spaces. The large shelter with tables and charcoal grills has room for several gatherings at once - we've seen birthday parties, family reunions, and casual get-togethers all coexisting happily here.
What you might not notice right away is how the park's design incorporates sustainable landscaping and smart drainage solutions. The design balances environmental considerations with community spaces throughout the park.
Good to Know
Note that while the park is well-maintained, it doesn't have permanent restrooms - just a wheelchair-accessible portable toilet. Dogs are welcome on the trails as long as they're leashed (and you clean up after them, of course).
One heads-up if you're visiting during school hours: you might see the neighborhood kids out for recess or PE classes, as the school occasionally uses the park facilities for their outdoor activities.
