About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Located in the Near Eastside of Indianapolis, Willard Park spans almost 11 acres of green space with a story that goes back generations. Named after William Willard, who founded the Indiana School for the Deaf on this very land, the park carries a legacy of community service. After the school relocated in 1911, the city transformed the area into a public park, officially opening in 1913 as part of George Edward Kessler's Park and Boulevard Plan - a visionary approach to urban green spaces in Indianapolis.
Evolution Through the Years
Willard Park has grown and changed with the community it serves. Back in 1916, the park started with the basics - tennis courts, a baseball diamond, a football field, and simple crushed stone walkways. The 1930s brought even more reasons to visit with the addition of a swimming pool and picnic shelter. The park also houses the solemn Sylvia Likens Memorial, offering a quiet space for reflection.
What's New at Willard
The park has evolved over the years. Following a 2001 IndyParks master plan, Willard received some much-needed updates including basketball courts, a family activities center, and a walking trail for those looking to get their steps in. A notable recent addition came in 2022 - a 13,000-square-foot skate park, Indianapolis' first in over two decades. Built by Hunger Skateparks, this skating haven features smooth flow and granite ledges that appeal to everyone from beginners to seasoned skaters.
Get Moving
Willard Park offers options for both active recreation and relaxed outdoor time. Beyond the impressive skate park, you'll come across basketball courts where local pickup games often unfold, a baseball field excellent for weekend games, and a soccer field where future stars practice their footwork. For the little ones, there's a playground complete with slides and swings. And if you're just looking to spread out a blanket and relax, the open green spaces make an ideal spot for a casual picnic or tossing a frisbee around.
Far From Just a Park
Willard Park provides green space for the Near Eastside neighborhoods, balancing its historical significance with contemporary amenities. It functions as a gathering place where neighbors meet, families spend time together, and visitors can enjoy nature within the city. While it might face the occasional maintenance issue (like any urban park), Willard remains a cherished resource for locals. It's also worth noting that your four-legged friends are welcome here, making it a popular spot for dog walkers looking to socialize their pets.
