About the Location

A Green Oasis for Everyone

Situated on the east side of South Bend, Potawatomi Park spreads across roughly 150 acres of scenic natural beauty. It offers a wide variety of activities and features that appeal to many different interests.

The park recently added a splash pad that's great for those sweltering Indiana summer days. There's also an exercise track for those morning jogs or evening walks, and one of the best features has to be the universally accessible playground - one of the largest in the region. The Kids' Kingdom playground is a community-built area where children can play and explore. What makes this play area even more enjoyable is its location beneath magnificent old-growth elm, oak, and maple trees, providing natural air conditioning when temperatures climb.

Gather & Celebrate

Planning a family reunion or community event? You'll discover plenty of picnic tables around the grounds, many tucked under the shade of towering trees. Several pavilions equipped with electrical outlets can be reserved ahead of time for your gatherings. These reserved shelters also include designated grilling areas, so you can cook up something delicious while enjoying the outdoors. The layout is well-thought-out, with trash cans strategically placed near picnic areas - it's those little conveniences that make a difference when you're hosting a large group.

Natural Beauty

One of the park's defining features is its abundance of shade. The tall old-growth trees create cool, peaceful spaces around the grounds - even extending to some parking areas, which is a blessing on hot days. For plant enthusiasts, the Potawatomi Conservatories offer a tranquil garden experience with tropical plants, educational programs, and special events. Behind the conservatory, you'll discover a large, well-maintained public vegetable garden that's worth exploring.

Cultural Hub

The Chris Wilson Pavilion acts as an outdoor community performance stage that comes alive with music and art throughout the season. On summer evenings, you might catch free concerts, including performances by the South Bend Symphony that draw crowds with picnic blankets and lawn chairs. Throughout the year, the park transforms for various festivals and community celebrations, including the Rebel Art Festival and South Bend Pride, making it an important cultural venue for the community.

Four-Legged Friends Welcome

If you're a dog owner, you'll appreciate the numerous paths and loops meant for leashed walks. The thoughtful layout provides plenty of sidewalks and grassy areas where your furry companions can enjoy the outdoors alongside you, making it a popular spot for daily dog walks.

Looking Forward

Over the years, the park has seen thoughtful improvements like expanded parking, upgraded accessible restrooms, and enhanced playground surfaces for better safety and inclusivity. While the Potawatomi Pool is currently closed, there are ongoing efforts to restore this much-missed feature.

Beyond the Park

Right next door is the Potawatomi Zoo - the oldest zoo in Indiana and the largest in the region outside of Chicago. The zoo continues to modernize and expand, making it an excellent companion visit to your park adventure.

Regardless of whether you're looking for a peaceful morning walk, a family playground day, or a spot to enjoy local culture and community, Potawatomi Park offers a mix of natural beauty and useful amenities. It's a well-established green space that many South Bend residents regularly visit.
