About the Location

Historic Grounds

Located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Bever Park covers 86 acres of greenery that has been enjoyed by locals since 1922. That's over a century of memories made under the shade of its majestic trees!

The park takes its name from Henry C. Bever, a big-hearted Cedar Rapids philanthropist who once served as mayor. Its blend of natural beauty and activities makes it popular with everyone from solo visitors to families with energetic kids.

Old MacDonald's Farm

If you're visiting between May and September, don't miss Old MacDonald's Farm, a free petting zoo that's been charming visitors for over 100 years. The farm features a variety of animals - chickens, cattle, ducks, goats, lambs, pigs, and rabbits. You'll even spot some North American waterfowl!

It's a fantastic place for children to get up close with farm animals in a safe setting - something increasingly rare in our digital age. Behind the farm, you'll discover a network of winding paths connecting multiple ponds where ducks paddle contentedly, creating a scene straight out of a storybook.

Natural Beauty

Walking through Bever Park can be quite relaxing. Tall trees provide shade over well-kept gardens, with winding trails excellent for a leisurely stroll. The wide, tree-lined streets with their welcoming sidewalks make for perfect afternoon strolls.

Bird enthusiasts, bring your binoculars - the park offers excellent birding opportunities throughout the seasons. While the 2020 derecho unfortunately damaged some of the park's oldest trees, the natural beauty of the space remains.

Rich Zoo History

Here's a fascinating tidbit: Bever Park once housed Cedar Rapids' largest zoo! Back in the day, tigers, lions, monkeys, ostriches, bears, and wolves called this place home. Though those days are gone, the spirit lives on through Old MacDonald's Farm.

Longer-term locals sometimes reminisce about visiting the more extensive zoo facilities decades ago. Today's smaller animal exhibits carry forward that cherished tradition while adapting to modern sensibilities.

Recreational Facilities

During summer, the swimming pool is particularly popular. With its zero-depth entry for little ones and dedicated lap swim times for adults, it offers something for everyone. It's typically less crowded than other public pools in the area, making for a more relaxed experience.

Sports more your thing? Test your skills on the tennis courts or join the growing crowd of pickleball enthusiasts. The softball fields provide plenty of space for America's favorite pastime, while winter transforms part of the park into an ice rink for seasonal fun.

Family-Friendly Features

Children can enjoy Bever Park's two modern playgrounds with recently updated equipment. One playground features an adorable barn theme that complements Old MacDonald's Farm - clever touch! Parents appreciate the strategically placed benches that make supervision comfortable.

Planning a get-together? The multiple picnic shelters scattered within the grounds might be just what you need. Some can be reserved for larger gatherings, and many include grilling facilities for those perfect summer cookouts. The park occasionally hosts concerts and community events, adding a social dimension to this natural haven.

Amenities

Practical matters matter too! The park's recently upgraded restroom facilities are well-maintained during warmer months (though note they're seasonal). You'll come across plenty of parking throughout the grounds, so no need to worry about where to leave your car.

Four-legged family members are welcome too - the park is dog-friendly, with many visitors enjoying walks with their leashed companions. And here's a fun fact: at summer's end, there are special events where dogs and their humans can splash together in the pool before it closes for the season!
