About the Location
Park Overview
Located in West Des Moines, Jordan Creek Park covers 275.5 acres following the path of Jordan Creek. As part of the city's greenway system, the park provides a place to exercise or enjoy nature away from the city.
Trail System
The park features a 7-mile paved multipurpose trail that stretches east to west across the city. Following Jordan Creek's meandering path, this trail has become a favorite among locals who bike, skate, or stroll through its scenic corridors.
As you make your way along the path, you'll find yourself occasionally skirting active railroad tracks or ducking through patches of woodland - little moments of variety that keep the journey interesting. What's especially convenient is how easily you can hop from here onto the broader Central Iowa Trails network when you're craving a longer adventure.
Access Points
Getting to the park is a breeze thanks to four trailheads positioned throughout the area: Westridge School Trailhead, Southwoods Park Trailhead, Jordan Creek Park Trailhead, and Fairmeadows Park Trailhead. This thoughtful layout means you're never too far from an entry point, no matter which neighborhood you're coming from.
Community Gardens
One of the park's most charming features has to be the Jordan Creek Community Gardens. Here, green-thumbed locals can rent 10' x 10' garden plots for a reasonable annual fee. There's something special about growing your own tomatoes or sunflowers alongside neighbors doing the same - it creates a unique sense of community while promoting sustainable living.
If you're interested in claiming a plot of your own, just reach out to the West Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department to check availability and sign up.
Visitor Amenities
Just west of 50th Street, you'll find an Info Hub and Bike Repair Station - a lifesaver if you've got a loose chain or need to pump up your tires during a ride. It's also a great spot to get your bearings and learn more about the surrounding trail system.
For basic necessities, porta-potties are available throughout the grounds. The park also features plenty of open space where you can toss a frisbee, have a picnic, or simply sprawl out with a good book.
Dog-Friendly Area
Four-legged friends are welcome at Jordan Creek Park, with a generous open field that's well-suited for a game of fetch or frisbee. While not fenced, the area provides ample room for dogs to stretch their legs and burn off energy.
Note that you should keep your pup on a leash, especially when other dogs or children are around - it's both courteous and park policy.
