About Henry A. Tandy Centennial Park
Historic Significance
Located in the heart of downtown Lexington, Kentucky, Henry A. Tandy Centennial Park is both a peaceful retreat and a powerful reminder of our shared history. Once known as Cheapside Park, this special spot at the historic Courthouse Square was reimagined and renamed in 2020 to honor Henry A. Tandy, a remarkable African-American stonemason and entrepreneur whose skilled hands helped shape Lexington's architectural character.
The park's past tells a complex story - during the 19th century, this area was a bustling marketplace that unfortunately included slave trading. Thanks to the passionate work of the "Take Back Cheapside" movement, the space has undergone a meaningful transformation, shifting its narrative toward celebration of justice and inclusivity for all.
