Pope Lick Park
About Pope Lick Park
Natural Landscape
Stretching across more than 400 acres, Pope Lick Park is a gorgeous glimpse of The Parklands of Floyds Fork system that opened back in 2013. It features diverse habitats from dense woodlands to open grasslands and peaceful corridors along Floyds Fork Creek.
We absolutely love wandering through the tranquil Prairie Preserve or standing in awe among the towering trees of the Big Beech Woods, where some beech giants have been quietly growing for over a century. If you're timing your visit, fall brings a spectacular color show as the leaves change, while summer transforms the park entrance into a natural garden, with wildflowers painting the landscape in vibrant hues.
Trail Network
The trails here are definitely a highlight - over four miles of well-kept paths for walking and biking. The Louisville Loop runs through the park, crossing Floyds Fork on a photogenic bridge. This Loop isn't just contained to Pope Lick either; it stretches for miles, connecting you to neighboring parks like Beckley and Turkey Run.
Looking for something a bit more adventurous? The Big Beech Trail offers some fun challenges with its uneven terrain and natural creek crossings. The park offers a mix of paved, gravel, and dirt trails, so there's something for everyone regardless of your experience level. Most sections of the Louisville Loop here are fairly flat - perfect if you're just getting into cycling or prefer a more relaxed walk.
Keep your eyes peeled while you're out there - the park is home to all kinds of wildlife. Deer often appear like ghosts between the trees, colorful songbirds provide a natural soundtrack, and if you're lucky, you might spot the magnificent Pileated Woodpecker going about its day.
Historic Features
One thing that makes Pope Lick unique is the historic Pope Lick Trestle, a railroad bridge with a colorful history in local lore. The park has a sense of humor about its connection to the legendary Pope Lick Monster (sometimes called the Goatman or Sheepman), even hosting themed events all year long.
Need a snack or want a quirky souvenir? The Legend at Pope Lick shop near the entrance sells refreshments and folklore-inspired items.
Recreation Opportunities
If land-based activities aren't enough, the creek offers spots for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. For those with a steady hand, there's an archery range with targets set at various distances from 10 to 50 yards.
Soccer enthusiasts will appreciate the multiple soccer fields that regularly host local games and practices. The park also brings the community together with events during the year - movie nights under the stars, festivals celebrating the seasons, and themed gatherings like Halloween parties.
Amenities
You'll find clean, modern restrooms strategically placed along the trails - always a relief during a long day outdoors. Kids can burn off energy at the playground, which has swings and play equipment, but it's not the largest you'll discover in the parks system.
Picnic areas with tables are scattered throughout, and the spacious grassy fields make perfect spots to spread out a blanket for an impromptu lunch. Dog owners, you can bring your four-legged friends as long as they stay leashed, and there are water dishes near the fountains by the bathrooms.
One of the best things about Pope Lick Park is how it seamlessly connects to other areas of The Parklands, making it easy to extend your adventure. With its blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and practical amenities, it's a wonderful place to escape the everyday and reconnect with nature.
