Historical Significance

Wayside Park is a small, historic green space located at 3190 South 3rd Street in Louisville, Kentucky. Part of the renowned Olmsted Parks system, which was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the park spans approximately two acres and provides a peaceful retreat near the bustling Southern Parkway.

It is situated close to the iconic Churchill Downs and Jim Patterson Stadium, offering views of the horse barns associated with the famed Kentucky Derby.

Artistic Features

The park is notable for its historical and artistic significance. At its center is the Wheelman's Bench, a public art piece created in 1897 by Enid Yandell, one of Kentucky's most celebrated sculptors.

This bench was designed to honor A.D. Ruff, a pioneer in American cycling, making the park deeply tied to Louisville's cycling history. The semi-circular stone bench includes a wall that provides protection from wind during winter months. Recent restoration efforts by the Olmsted Parks Conservancy have revitalized the park's landscaping and facilities, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
