About the Location
Rich History
Situated in the northern reaches of East Baton Rouge Parish, just before you hit the City of Central, North Sherwood Forest Community Park sprawls across 133.18 acres of land with quite a story to tell. This family-friendly green space sits on what was once the Federal Sharp Station Depot during World War II - pretty cool historical roots, right?
Over the years, the federal government gradually released portions of the property to BREC (Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge) to develop into the park we know today, while still maintaining ownership of some sections.
Innovative Indoor Facilities
At the heart of the park is the Virtual Park, an exergaming facility where you can climb, cycle, and dance your way through interactive video games. It's exercise, but it feels more like play - which is kind of the point, isn't it?
When Louisiana weather gets unpredictable, the 0.15-mile indoor air-conditioned walking track provides a good alternative. There's also a free indoor playground that's excellent for the littlest visitors - those energetic toddlers between 0-3 years old who need a safe place to burn off some energy.
The park's fitness center offers modern equipment suitable for everyone from beginners to fitness enthusiasts.
Outdoor Recreation
The park's 3-acre fishing lake offers a peaceful spot for bank fishing (just remember to bring your valid Louisiana fishing permit). There's something wonderfully calming about spending time near water, whether you're fishing or just enjoying the scenery.
Kids have plenty of room to play on the expansive playground, thoughtfully designed with different sections for various age groups. The toddler area for ages 0-4 and the section for kids 5-12 both feature bouncy safety surfacing to cushion any tumbles. When summer temperatures soar, the splash pad becomes the place to be, with various spray features that offer a refreshing escape from the heat.
Sports and Activities
Feeling competitive? The park boasts lighted tennis courts, basketball courts, and a multi-purpose field (though the field isn't lit for evening play).
Walking enthusiasts can choose between indoor comfort or outdoor beauty on the park's well-maintained walking loops. The outdoor paths are particularly nice - clean, convenient, and well-kept.
Picnic and Gathering Areas
Dotted throughout the property are several clean, shaded picnic areas that provide perfect spots for a family lunch or a quiet afternoon read. If you're planning something bigger, the large pavilions spaced around the grounds make ideal venues for family reunions or birthday celebrations.
You'll also find benches near the water and across the park - ideal for taking a moment to sit, breathe, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Amenities
Additional amenities include free Wi-Fi (because sometimes you need to check your email, even in nature), a recreation center, and clean restrooms.
BREC keeps improving the space too, adding features like shade sails over the playground and enhancing the fish habitats in the lake. These improvements help keep the park facilities up to date.
As evening falls, the park's good lighting ensures it remains accessible and safe, allowing you to enjoy this lovely space throughout the day.
