A Green Haven with History

The park bears the name of Arnold E. Sumpter, who wasn't just any coach but a truly influential figure at Murphy Home Recreation Center. As a young Morgan State University student and city recreation employee, Sumpter made a lasting impact before his life was tragically cut short in August 1971 at just 23 years old.

The 2.9-acre park in Baltimore's Bolton Hill neighborhood carries his legacy well - it's the kind of place where you can find kids laughing on the playground while adults chat on benches nearby, a genuine neighborhood gathering spot.

If you're bringing the kids along, you'll appreciate the playground that caters to children of various ages. It's typically clean and well-kept, however it could certainly use more play equipment to keep the little ones entertained longer.

The annual Boltonstock summer concert transforms the space into an outdoor music venue that neighbors look forward to all year. The Bolton Hill Garden Club also hosts various seasonal events that add color and life to the park.

From soccer tournaments to birthday celebrations, the park hosts many community gatherings throughout the year. It's not uncommon to see neighbors who came for a quick dog walk still chatting with friends an hour later, as the residential location gives it a comfortable, neighborhood feel.
