Castle Island
About Castle Island
Historic Fort
At the heart of Castle Island stands Fort Independence, a striking pentagonal fort with five bastions built of solid granite between 1834 and 1851. This impressive structure isn't just pretty to look at - it's actually listed on the National Register of Historic Places and represents the eighth generation of forts on this spot, with defensive structures dating all the way back to 1634.
If you visit during summer, you can join guided tours that bring the fort's rich history to life. History buffs might want to check out the twilight walks offered on Thursday evenings in summer - there's something special about exploring these historic walls as the day winds down.

Scenic Views and Trails
One of the best things about Castle Island is its breathtaking views of Boston Harbor, Logan Airport, and the Boston skyline. The 2.2-mile paved Harborwalk circles Pleasure Bay and makes for a perfect route whether you're taking a leisurely stroll, going for a jog, or cycling along the water.
There's something oddly mesmerizing about watching planes take off and land at nearby Logan Airport against the backdrop of the harbor. From the fishing dock on the harbor side of the fort, you can spot all kinds of vessels - from small sailboats to massive cruise ships and cargo vessels making their way through the harbor.
This path isn't just a local feature - it's actually part of the larger Boston Harborwalk network that connects much of the city's waterfront areas.

Beaches and Recreation
When the weather warms up, Castle Island offers several beaches along its shoreline, including the peaceful Pleasure Bay Beach and part of Carson Beach. These spots are ideal for spreading out a towel, taking a refreshing dip, or trying your luck with a fishing rod.
Anglers will appreciate the dedicated fishing pier on the harbor side of the fort. During summer months, Pleasure Bay's calm waters make it an especially good beach option if you're visiting with little ones who want to splash around safely.

Family-Friendly Amenities
If you're bringing kids along, they'll love the playground area cleverly designed after the fort's five-point star shape. Recently renovated, it offers a variety of equipment that works for children of different ages.
Around the park, especially in the shaded areas near Fort Independence and facing Sullivan's, you'll come across picnic areas complete with tables and grills. These make perfect spots to relax with a packed lunch while enjoying those fantastic harbor views.
No visit is complete without stopping at Sullivan's, a beloved local food stand that serves classic New England fare. From fried clams and hot dogs to burgers, fish sandwiches, and ice cream, it's an ideal place to refuel during your visit.

Accessibility and Amenities
The park welcomes visitors year-round from 6:30AM to 7PM, letting you experience its charm across all seasons. You can find clean restrooms near the parking lot, and the park is generally well-kept throughout.
Most of Castle Island is accessible, with paved paths suitable for wheelchairs, however be aware that some areas near the fort have steeper inclines. Dog owners will be happy to know that four-legged friends are welcome, as long as they're kept on leashes.
While parking is free and plentiful - a rarity in Boston! - it can fill up quickly on weekends and during summer, especially before noon. If you arrive to find the main lot full, you can usually find additional street parking nearby.
