About McLaughlin Playground
A Step Back in Time
Found in Roxbury Crossing, McLaughlin Playground has been a community fixture since 1912. This park stretches down Parker Hill Avenue in a series of terraced levels, each offering something different.
One of the park's best-kept secrets? A mini-orchard of at least 20 mature apple trees, some silently standing watch for between 30 and 100 years. These aren't just any trees - they're living descendants of the colonial orchard once owned by Peter Parker (no, not the superhero). This historical connection adds an interesting dimension to the park within Boston's urban setting.
Five Tiers of Fun
The playground is arranged across five distinct levels. At the very top, Parker hilltop offers sweeping views of Boston.
The fourth tier has lived many lives - once home to tennis courts and even serving time as a parking lot for the New England Baptist Hospital.
Drop down to the third tier and you'll discover basketball courts alongside a tot lot for the little ones. Sure, the playground equipment isn't exactly cutting-edge, but it's a peaceful spot where kids can enjoy the simple pleasures of swings and slides without the crowds.
The second tier (and the largest) houses a softball field and running track, while the bottom tier proudly supports the Mission Hill Little League field. These generous open spaces don't just accommodate baseball - you'll often spot enthusiasts tossing ultimate frisbee discs across the green.
Green Revival
Recent years have seen a renewed focus on McLaughlin's natural side. The McLaughlin Woodlands & Orchard area has welcomed new trees in a budding maple grove, while efforts to establish pollinator meadows continue to take root.
These green initiatives have made the park a good spot for birding within Boston, attracting various birds throughout the seasons.
Where Community Happens
The park offers space for various activities - from basketball games to Little League matches, or just finding a quiet spot to enjoy some nature. Dog owners, you're welcome too - just remember to clean up after your four-legged friends.
The park's variety of spaces creates a nice balance between active areas and quieter spots. It's generally well-kept, neither overcrowded nor neglected - just right for a neighborhood park.
Finding Your Way
Short walking trails meander through the different levels, making it easy to explore the entire park at your leisure. These paths connect all areas, so you won't miss out on anything McLaughlin has to offer.
Note that there are no permanent restrooms on site, but you might find temporary facilities during sporting events - something to keep in mind if you're planning an extended visit.
