About Norman B. Leventhal Park

Urban Oasis in Downtown Boston

Nestled among the towering skyscrapers of Boston's Financial District in Post Office Square, Norman B. Leventhal Park is a 1.7-acre slice of tranquility. What's fascinating is that this lovely green space was once an eyesore - an above-ground parking garage that nobody missed when it was demolished in 1991.

The transformation created a public space that blends modern design with lush greenery. The park sits atop a seven-level underground parking garage (talk about making the most of urban space!), which offers convenient parking for downtown visitors, with better rates on weekends and after 4 PM.

This public-private partnership has influenced the design of other urban parks.

Stunning Design Features

The park features well-maintained landscaping with over 125 different plant species. At its heart lies the walk-through sculptural fountain, "Immanent Circumstance" - created by artist Howard Ben Tré.

When running, it creates a water dome effect that's both dynamic and calming. On warm days, you'll often spot kids gleefully splashing in the fountain, adding life and laughter to the space.

Another standout feature is the 143-foot-long garden trellis on the eastern side. With its granite columns and open dome framing a pedestrian promenade, it's quite the architectural statement.

Draped in ivy and illuminated by a color-changing lighting scheme that shifts with the seasons, this pergola creates a romantic walkway that's become a favorite backdrop for wedding photos. And honestly, it's not hard to see why.

Relaxation Spaces

The Great Lawn, slightly elevated above the surrounding pathways by a subtle granite curb, is where you'll want to plop down on a nice day. The park thoughtfully provides free seat cushions - a small touch that makes a big difference when you're looking to unwind.

Whether you prefer a bench, granite wall, or café-style table, there are options for sitting in both sun and shade. The garage ramps are concealed with greenery, integrating them into the cityscape.

It's remarkably peaceful here, despite being surrounded by the financial district's hustle and bustle. The clean, well-maintained environment makes it an ideal spot to take a breather, eat lunch, or simply watch the world go by.

Community Amenities

If you need a caffeine fix or a bite to eat, head to Sips Café, a charming coffee shop right in the park. It serves up quality coffee, sandwiches, and snacks that have made it a regular morning stop for many nearby office workers.

One practical perk worth noting: clean public restrooms are accessible via the underground parking garage - no small convenience when you're exploring downtown Boston. And if you've brought your four-legged friend along, you'll be happy to know the park is dog-friendly.

Community Activities

This park isn't just pretty to look at - it's also a hub of activity, especially during the warmer months. You might stumble upon free midday musical performances (imagine eating your lunch while a harpist plays on the lawn), outdoor fitness classes, or friendly cornhole competitions set up for anyone to join.

One of our favorite touches is the "Library on the Lawn," which offers books and magazines for visitors who want to read in the sunshine. These programs and amenities help make the park a community space that offers a retreat in the midst of city life.
