Danehy Park
About Danehy Park
From Landfill to Local Treasure
Back in 1990, Cambridge unveiled what would become one of its most cherished green spaces. Danehy Park, spanning 50 acres along the MBTA Fitchburg Line, has an interesting history - it was once a brickyard, then a landfill, before being transformed into the green space we know today. You can find your way in through several entrances, including the main one at 99 Sherman Street.

Nature's Comeback
Danehy balances environmental restoration with recreational spaces. The park features two acres of wetland habitat that's become a haven for local wildlife. If you're into birdwatching, bring your binoculars - the diverse bird population makes for some excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
One of the park's newer ecological features is Cambridge's first Miyawaki Forest. Perched near the hilltop, this densely planted native forest isn't just pretty to look at - it's designed to mature much faster than traditional forests and functions as a living, breathing classroom for anyone interested in ecology.

Get Moving
For the active visitor, Danehy offers soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and a 400-meter running track (currently being renovated). If you prefer a longer route, the 1.5-mile walking and running path winds throughout the park and is made from recycled materials - a nice environmental touch.
At 72 feet above sea level, the park's hill is actually the highest point in Cambridge, offering some panoramic views of the surrounding area. Come winter, this same slope transforms into Cambridge's go-to sledding destination, filled with laughing families and the occasional adult who's still a kid at heart.

Something for Everyone
Danehy features a wide variety of recreational options. You'll find basketball courts, tennis courts, and two separate playgrounds on opposite ends of the park. The accessible Universal Design playground is thoughtfully crafted so children of all abilities can join in the fun. And when summer heats up, the splash pad becomes the coolest spot in the park - literally.

Gather Round
The park functions as a community gathering place. Art installations add cultural flair to your visit, while numerous picnic tables and grilling areas (concentrated mostly in the central area) make it meant for everything from family reunions to casual lunch breaks. Just bring your favorite sandwich and find a spot on the grass.
For dog owners: There's a fully fenced dog park near the New Street entrance parking lot where your Cambridge-licensed pups can run free. If your four-legged friend prefers to stay by your side, leashed dogs are welcome around the park's walkways.

Good to Know
Regarding facilities: Restroom facilities include permanent restrooms at the eastern Sherman Street entrance (open year-round) and portable toilets located throughout the grounds.
Driving? You'll come across three parking lots, however they tend to fill up quickly during peak times and special events. Speaking of events, Danehy hosts community gatherings throughout the year, including the Cambridge Jazz Festival and a weekly 5K Parkrun every Saturday morning for the early birds.
Danehy Park represents successful urban renewal, combining ecological elements with recreational spaces for visitors of all ages and interests.
