Riverbend Park
About Riverbend Park
A Riverside Retreat
Tucked away in the Cambridgeport neighborhood of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Riverbend Park offers a breath of fresh air alongside the Charles River. Just a stone's throw from Harvard Square, this green oasis manages to feel miles away from city life while being right in its backyard.
The park features sprawling grassy areas great for picnic blankets and lazy afternoon naps, all with lovely views of the gently flowing river. On sunny days, you'll spot Harvard students and locals alike lounging by the water's edge, textbooks optional and good vibes mandatory.

Get Moving or Just Chill
Whether you're looking to break a sweat or take a break from routine, Riverbend Park offers options for both. A well-maintained pathway runs parallel to Memorial Drive, becoming a natural runway for morning joggers, determined runners, and weekend cyclists.
Not feeling particularly athletic? The park welcomes all energy levels. Take a leisurely stroll along the riverbank, find a quiet spot to dive into your latest read, or simply claim a patch of grass and soak up some vitamin D. A charming foot bridge connects to the Boston side of the Charles, opening up even more walking possibilities and offering fresh angles of the water that make for perfect photo ops.

Community Celebrations
The park's peaceful vibe gets an occasional adrenaline boost with events that bring the community together. The prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta and the colorful Dragon Boat races transform these quiet grounds into buzzing hubs of excitement and friendly competition.
During warmer months, various festivals pop up along the riverbank, drawing folks from Cambridge, Boston, and beyond to celebrate in this scenic setting.

Weekend Magic
A particularly nice feature: from late April through mid-November, Memorial Drive closes to cars on Sundays (and during Saturday festivals) from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. between Western Avenue and Gerry's Landing.
This simple act of removing vehicles creates an entirely different park experience. The expanded car-free zone becomes a playground for bikers, rollerbladers, and pedestrians who can spread out and enjoy the extra breathing room. You'll see everything from impromptu games of frisbee to parents teaching kids to ride bikes in this temporary urban playground.

A Vision Realized
The community has local advocate Isabella Halsted to thank for this riverside space. Back in 1975, she led the charge to establish the park with a clear mission: reconnect Cambridge residents with their river.
Decades later, Riverbend Park continues as a community space where nature and urban life coexist. It offers a chance to step away from city life while remaining in the heart of Cambridge.
