Hovey Park
About Hovey Park
A Fresh Community Oasis
Located in Lowell, Massachusetts, Hovey Park stretches across 9.5 acres of thoughtfully designed space. It's one of the newer spaces in the city - renovated just a few years ago - with clean facilities and a welcoming atmosphere.
About 1.25 acres of the park underwent a major transformation recently, blossoming into Lowell's first fully accessible playground. This renovation focused on creating a space where ability levels don't limit who can enjoy the playground.
Play Features That Welcome Everyone
The playground feels refreshingly modern, weaving in natural elements like boulders and native plantings that bring a touch of the wild into an urban setting. One of our favorite features has to be the hillside rollerslide with its "dignity exit" platform - such a thoughtful touch that lets kids of all abilities enjoy the thrill of sliding while having comfortable rest areas nearby.
Designed with 3-12 year-olds in mind, the playground doesn't just nod at accessibility - it embraces it fully. You can find a bridge with gentle slopes that welcomes wheelchairs without making a big deal about it, and specialized swings that support children in various positions depending on their needs. The ground is covered in rubber material, making tumbles less scary for adventurous little ones.
Throughout the space, shade trees create cool retreats on hot days, complemented by peaceful sitting areas where you can catch your breath. Parking is available, and the pathways have been thoughtfully designed for visitors who might have mobility considerations.
Beyond the Playground
Feeling hungry after all that play? Several picnic tables are scattered within the park, well-suited for impromptu lunches or planned gatherings. If you're in the mood for more active fun, a large soccer field sits right next to the playground, inviting informal games and organized sports alike. Near the parking area, you might find portable restrooms, however they're not always there year-round - something to keep in mind when planning longer visits.
A Park With Local Heart
What adds character to Hovey Park is the community artwork integrated across the grounds. These creative touches connect the space to Lowell's cultural fabric. Despite not being the biggest park around, Hovey uses its terrain effectively, creating a safe, engaging environment popular with local families. The park blends natural elements with thoughtful design to create a functional community space.
