About Worcester Common
A Slice of History in Downtown Worcester
Nestled in the heart of downtown, Worcester Common has been the city's social anchor since 1669. While it's shrunk from its original 20 acres to about 4.4 acres today, this green space remains an important gathering place for the city.
The Common sits perfectly framed by Main Street to the west, Franklin Street to the south, and Front Street wrapping around the north and east sides. At the western edge stands the Worcester City Hall - an impressive Italianate building from 1898 that adds a touch of architectural grandeur to the park's backdrop.
From Declaration Readings to Public Gatherings
This patch of green has witnessed centuries of Worcester's story unfold. Back in 1719, the first public building appeared here - a simple meeting house that served both spiritual and civic needs.
By 1763, this was replaced with the grander Old South Meeting House, which earned its place in American history when the Declaration of Independence was read aloud here on July 14, 1776 - the first public reading in New England.
Tucked within the Common is a small, historic burial ground with weathered gravestones that whisper stories of Worcester's earliest days. If you're into local history, these monuments offer a tangible connection to the city's past.
Monuments That Tell Stories
As you wander through the Common, you'll encounter several meaningful monuments. Near the northeast corner stands the Soldiers' Monument, a solemn tribute to the 398 Worcester soldiers who gave their lives during the Civil War.
The center area features the old burial ground with its historic gravestones and the Bigelow Monument. And don't miss the quirky Burnside Fountain in the southeast corner, featuring the sculpture "Boy with a Turtle" - affectionately nicknamed "Turtle Boy" by locals.
Seasonal Magic
When winter blankets Worcester, the Common transforms with the installation of the Worcester Oval, a charming outdoor ice skating rink that draws families from across the city. You can rent skates for $5 if you didn't bring your own, making it an accessible winter activity for everyone.
The holiday season brings the Common to life with Christmas lights and festive decorations throughout the space. The annual menorah lighting ceremonies and holiday festivals foster a sense of community during the coldest months of the year.
The Common Today
Now representing Worcester's primary public gathering space, the Common hosts a variety of cultural events and community celebrations throughout the year. Summer brings regular food truck festivals with live music on Thursdays - a nice option for after-work relaxation.
The park offers a green retreat from the surrounding urban landscape, with plenty of benches where you can relax, read a book, or enjoy lunch. Its central location makes it incredibly convenient - just a three-minute walk from the main bus station and close to Union Station for train connections.
Year-round, the Common hosts diverse cultural celebrations including the Day of the Dead festival and various summer events that showcase Worcester's multicultural community.
The open green spaces are ideal for picnics and walking your dog, however it's worth noting there aren't permanent picnic tables or restroom facilities (though portable toilets appear during events). Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Worcester Common combines historical significance with contemporary public use.
