About the Location
A Glimpse into History
Tucked just south of downtown Ann Arbor, the 15-acre Burns Park carries stories from decades past. Once the bustling Washtenaw County Fairgrounds complete with a horse racetrack (whose outline you can still spot today!), this green space is now central to the surrounding neighborhood. Named after U-M botany professor George Burns, the park complements the area's historic architecture and tight-knit community vibe.
Play Your Heart Out
Whether you're looking to break a sweat or just enjoy some fresh air, Burns Park has plenty of options. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the tennis and pickleball courts (the latter being quite the hotspot), a basketball court, baseball and softball fields, and space for football or soccer.
Kids have plenty to explore with four separate playground areas featuring a large multi-play structure, swings, and activities designed for various age groups. When winter blankets Ann Arbor, the sledding hill becomes the place to be for snowy fun.
You'll also find practical amenities like picnic tables and grills for those perfect summer gatherings, an outdoor classroom that makes a great birthday party spot, restrooms in the warming hut, two rain gardens, and even a pétanque court for those who fancy a bit of French bowling.
Nature and Neighborhood Connection
The park's walking trails wind through lush surroundings, offering peaceful routes for morning jogs or evening strolls. Its tree-lined setting creates a natural retreat within the city, while still being incredibly accessible to residents and visitors alike.
The park's connection to Burns Park Elementary School makes it an extension of the educational experience for many local children, blending learning with play in the most natural way.
Community Spirit
What really makes Burns Park special is how it brings people together. It's where neighbors become friends and community traditions take root. The surrounding area is famous for its seasonal spirit - during Halloween and Christmas, local homes transform with decorations that range from charming to spectacular.
With its rich history, natural beauty, and recreational diversity, Burns Park is a well-used part of Ann Arbor's landscape - suitable for both peaceful solitude and gatherings with friends and family.
