About the Location

A Breath of Fresh Air in Southwest Detroit

Found in one of Detroit's bustling neighborhoods, Romanowski Park spans 26 acres of green escape that's gotten quite the glow-up since its 2021 renovation. What was once a space showing its age has been renovated into a pleasant area where locals gather, play, and take a break from city life.

Wandering through this Southwest Detroit retreat, you can find a perimeter walking path excellent for those morning jogs or evening wind-down walks. Kids light up at the sight of the modern playground - a major upgrade that's become a neighborhood favorite.

Places to Play & Unwind

Need a spot for a casual lunch date or family gathering? The park offers several picnic areas with tables and benches scattered around the grounds. While you won't find endless seating options, the tables that are there provide perfect little oases for sandwich breaks or quiet moments with a good book.

Basketball enthusiasts, take note - the court on the St. John Avenue side isn't your average setup. Recently resurfaced and boasting an impressive 18 hoops, there's room for everyone from casual shooters to pickup game organizers. With this many hoops, there's rarely a need to wait for your turn.

The soccer fields have been renovated thanks to funding partnerships, making them a good spot for weekend matches. And in a clever twist on traditional offerings, the old tennis courts have found new life as futsal and pickleball courts - a nod to changing recreational trends that's been welcomed by visitors of all ages.

The Practical Stuff

Longer visits are made comfortable with portable restrooms stationed within the grounds - a simple but essential addition that makes afternoon-long adventures possible.

Near the entrance stands a charming gazebo that is both a landmark and starting point, with pathways branching out like spokes on a wheel. It's become an intuitive meeting spot - "See you at the gazebo!" is practically park language now.

Natural Beauty

What really makes Romanowski special is its peaceful atmosphere. Mature trees create natural canopies of shade, while the overall cleanliness and maintenance give it a cared-for feel that's inviting rather than institutional.

The track circling the park provides not just exercise space but a different perspective of the grounds with each bend. It's where early morning power-walkers nod hello and sunset strollers take in the neighborhood views.

The park's renovation was a collaborative project between the City of Detroit, the Detroit Pistons, the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, and other partners.

And yes, you can bring your four-legged friend along - the park is dog-friendly, making those daily walks a lot more interesting for both of you. From pickup basketball games to community gatherings, Romanowski Park is an important green space for Southwest Detroit residents.
