About the Location
A Hidden Local Park
Found in the Belknap Lookout neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Coit Park is a neighborhood green space that locals have enjoyed for generations. At 4.16 acres, this city-owned green space offers just enough room for a variety of activities without feeling overwhelming - making it an excellent spot to escape the urban bustle for a few hours.
A Penny for a Park
Believe it or not, this little slice of nature dates all the way back to 1909 when it was acquired for just $1 (talk about a bargain!). This was possible thanks to the generosity of Clara W. Coit, Edward W. Haines, Clark H. Gleason, and Robert H. Coit. The park actually started life as part of Coit School's playground before gradually transforming into the public space we know today.
In the 1950s, the park got some TLC through the Park Schools Agreement, cementing its place as a neighborhood fixture.
Play Your Heart Out
If you're looking to shoot some hoops or let the kids burn off energy, you'll find plenty of options here. You can find two basketball courts (including one with a single hoop for those solo practice sessions), a ball diamond for America's favorite pastime, and a playground that the little ones particularly love.
The playground deserves special mention with its variety of equipment specifically designed for younger children. Safety is a priority here - the play area features a decorative soft top surface to cushion any tumbles. And when snow blankets Grand Rapids, the park transforms with a sledding hill that brings wintertime joy to kids of all ages.
A Breath of Fresh Air
What makes Coit Park special is its varied topography with gentle hills and dips that add character to your walk. The large open field at the park's center invites impromptu games of frisbee, picnics on sunny days, or simply a place to stretch out with a good book.
Need a place to enjoy lunch? You'll come across about ten picnic tables scattered around the grounds, along with several benches ideal for people-watching or taking a moment to yourself.
The entire perimeter is lined with mature trees, creating a natural boundary that makes the park feel like its own little world within the city. While there are no restrooms on site (plan accordingly!), dog owners will appreciate the thoughtful addition of dog waste bags, making this a pet-friendly spot for leashed four-legged friends.
With its blend of recreational facilities, open spaces, and natural beauty, Coit Park is a pleasant neighborhood spot for the Grand Rapids community.
