About the Location
Play & Recreation Spaces
Located in Sterling Heights, Michigan, Washington Square Park spans a cozy 3.6 acres and is the neighborhood's go-to gathering spot. This spot provides a nice balance of activity and tranquility.
The recently resurfaced basketball courts and tennis courts are ready for your next game, but heads up - the basketball hoops have smaller-than-standard nets, so your ball might occasionally get stuck up there (basketball retrieval skills might come in handy!). There's also a multi-purpose field that's well-suited for everything from casual frisbee tosses to impromptu soccer matches.
Kid-Friendly Zone
If you've got little ones in tow, the playground area is a hit with the elementary school crowd (ages 5-12), but younger kiddos will find plenty to enjoy too. The play space packs in multiple slides, climbing structures, and swings - including an accessible swing that ensures everyone gets to join the fun.
What makes this playground special is how it manages to fit so many activities into a compact space. Your children can climb, step, slide, and swing to their hearts' content on equipment that's well-maintained and relatively new. Nothing's broken or unsafe here, making it an ideal spot for toddlers through elementary schoolers. Connected trails make it easy to navigate from one play feature to the next.
You can find picnic tables scattered throughout, excellent for snack breaks or family lunches, and benches strategically placed so you can take a breather while keeping an eye on the kids.
Getting Around & What to Know
The park embraces accessibility with ADA-compliant facilities throughout. A peaceful non-motorized trail winds through the grounds, offering a lovely path for a gentle stroll or bike ride.
If you're planning an evening visit, you might want to arrive early as parking can fill up during peak hours. Daytime visits typically offer plenty of spots, though. Mature trees provide generous shade within the park - a blessing on hot summer days.
Note that there are no public restrooms available, so plan accordingly. The park does offer some nice extras including bike racks, good lighting for safety, and an adorable little free library where you can leave a book or take one home.
With its well-kept facilities and peaceful neighborhood setting, Washington Square Park offers a simple but pleasant outdoor experience whether you're shooting hoops, pushing a swing, or just enjoying a quiet moment under the trees.
