About the Location
Natural Retreat
Nestled across 160 acres, Essex Park is mostly woodland - a great escape when you need to disconnect and breathe in some fresh air. The mix of paved and natural trails makes it accessible whether you're going for a quick jog or a leisurely nature walk.
The dense forest is home to wildlife, with whitetail deer sometimes visible if you're patient enough. Birdwatching is particularly rewarding here - bring your binoculars and you might be surprised at what you'll spot! Just a heads up: during humid summer days, you'll want to pack some bug spray as the mosquitoes can be numerous.
One of our favorite spots is the prairie restoration area where wildflowers create a stunning natural display, especially after the seasonal controlled burns that help keep this ecosystem thriving.
Places to Play
The park offers two distinct playground options. There's an older one tucked under the trees near the picnic shelter that's meant for younger kids (about 4-8 years old), and a newer, sunnier playground off 55th Street NW that works well for children of various ages.
If you're looking for something different, check out the archery range near the old barn - it's open to the public and makes for a unique outdoor activity. There are also sand volleyball courts and horseshoe pits for some friendly competition. The open grassy fields are excellent for impromptu soccer games or tossing a frisbee around.
The shaded picnic areas come complete with a shelter and multiple tables both inside and outside, making it easy to refuel after exploring. You can also reserve spaces for larger gatherings, however the shelter isn't enormous if you're planning something big.
Paths to Wander
The trails here offer interesting contrasts - one moment you might be aware of the nearby highway, and the next you're deep in woodland serenity. Many locals bring their dogs for walks, but remember that all pets need to stay on leash.
Beyond the natural paths winding through the woods, paved trails provide good accessibility and connect to the broader Rochester trail system. The Essex Park Trail links up with the Zumbro North Trail, opening up even more options for exploration.
Year-Round Beauty
When winter blankets the landscape, Essex Park transforms into a quiet wonderland with cross-country skiing trails that are reliably groomed - a true gift during Minnesota's long winters.
Each season brings its own charm to this natural space. Fall is particularly magical when the trees put on their colorful show, while the park's location away from the city's brightest lights makes evening visits special for catching glimpses of the night sky.
Amenities
You'll find restrooms near the picnic shelter during the warmer seasons, although they're fairly basic and could use some updating. The park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM to 10PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy everything it has to offer.
