About the Location

Trail Overview

Spanning over 1,856 acres along the Little Blue River, Little Blue Trace County Park offers a spacious natural setting along the Little Blue River. At its heart lies the Little Blue Trace Trail, stretching roughly 15.5 miles and fantastic for hiking, biking, or a rejuvenating jog.

The trail beautifully weaves through urban, suburban, and pastoral landscapes. With both crushed gravel and paved surfaces, it welcomes adventurers of all abilities. You can find the terrain mostly flat, alternating between asphalt, concrete, and gravel as you make your way through.

Natural Beauty

As you move along the path, you'll encounter various natural features. Around mile marker 7, a small waterfall creates a fantastic spot for a photo or moment of reflection. You'll cross various bridges (some with historical significance) and might spot local wildlife like deer and wild turkeys going about their day.

The trail runs from Blue Mills Road southward to Phelps Road, offering changing scenery throughout. If you're seeking a bit more tranquility, head to the northern section - it tends to be less crowded and more serene.

Amenities

The park doesn't skimp on conveniences. You'll find four shelters dotted along the way, 30 picnic tables for impromptu lunch breaks, and restrooms at strategic points (though not at every access point, so plan accordingly).

Multiple parking areas serve as convenient entry points, making it easy to design your adventure based on how much time you have. Safety is taken seriously here, with emergency call stations, ranger patrols, and trail coordinates helping ensure peace of mind while you explore.

Trail Access & Features

With numerous trailheads and entry points, you can tailor your experience to fit your schedule and energy level. About a mile from the northern end, the Ripley Junction trailhead offers a welcome rest stop.

Thoughtfully placed park benches provide perfect spots to catch your breath and take in the surroundings. Recent upgrades include new concrete sections that make certain parts of the trail even more accessible and enjoyable.

Visitor Information

The park is family-friendly with accommodations for strollers and areas where kids can safely explore. Four-legged friends are welcome too, just keep them leashed.

While mostly flat, be prepared for a few steeper sections, particularly where the trail crosses main roads. And don't forget sun protection - many stretches offer little shade, which can make for warm conditions on sunny days.

Whether you're looking for a quick family stroll, an extensive bike ride, or just a peaceful spot to enjoy a sandwich, Little Blue Trace County Park is a well-maintained outdoor space worth visiting.
