About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Tucked away at E. 43rd Street and Cleveland Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, Cleveland Park offers 37 acres of green space with a story to tell. Back in 1956, the Kansas City Park Department transformed this land - previously home to temporary housing for World War II veterans returning from service - into the public park we know today.
Before becoming a community gathering spot, this area helped veterans transition back to civilian life with small, temporary homes. By mid-1956, these structures were cleared away, making room for trees, grass, and the beginnings of a neighborhood park.
Play Ball!
Cleveland Park features four lighted ball diamonds. These fields have hosted countless baseball and softball games over the decades, becoming the heart of the park's identity. No matter if you're playing in a league or just catching a local game on a summer evening, there's something special about hearing the crack of a bat echo across the park.
If you work up an appetite while playing or cheering, the park's concession stands are open during games and events. Many visitors enjoy a hot dog and cold drink while watching the action on the field.
Kid-Friendly Corner
The Cleveland Park Playground might not be the biggest in town, but it serves its purpose perfectly. It's particularly handy if you've got little ones in tow while older siblings or family members are involved in games at the nearby ball fields.
Small but practical, this play area gives younger children a space to burn off energy and have fun while the baseball or softball games unfold nearby.
What to Know Before You Go
You'll discover restrooms available throughout your visit, which is always a plus for families spending the day outdoors. One thing to note - parking can be tight, especially during tournaments or weekend afternoons. You might want to arrive a bit early if you're planning to visit during peak times.
The park has that lived-in feel that comes with decades of service to the community. Some pathways and facilities show their age, but that's part of what gives Cleveland Park its authentic character.
A Neighborhood Retreat
As part of Kansas City's Central Park District, Cleveland Park balances its historical significance with its role as a modern community space. While it may not have all the bells and whistles of newer parks, there's something genuine about its simplicity.
It's a place where generations of Kansas City residents have gathered, played, and connected. The park's open spaces, ball fields, and play areas have made it a familiar gathering place for the neighborhood over the years.
