About the Location

Historical Significance

Originally part of the Penn Street Ravine, the land was historically traversed by pioneers on the Santa Fe Trail. Development of the park began in the early 1900s as part of Kansas City's "City Beautiful Movement," and it opened to the public in 1904.

The park is renowned for its sweeping views of downtown Kansas City and its prominent role in preserving local history and culture.

Monuments and Memorials

Dominating the park's northern edge is the National World War I Museum and Memorial, along with the iconic Liberty Memorial, commemorating those who served in the Great War.

The park also features several notable sculptures, including The Scout, a statue of a Sioux Native American on horseback, the Pioneer Mother Memorial, and The Hiker, which memorializes Spanish-American War veterans. These elements make Penn Valley Park a living tribute to American history and heritage.
