About the Location

A Slice of Kansas City History

Tucked away at the intersection of 75th Street and Holmes Road lies Tower Park, a 19-acre green haven with a story to tell. The park's crown jewel? The Waldo Water Tower (officially the Frank T. Riley Memorial) - a castle-like structure that stands as a silent witness to the area's evolution.

Built between 1919 and 1920, this impressive 134-foot reinforced concrete tower once had the practical job of maintaining water pressure for the neighborhood. Though it stopped its water duties in 1957, the tower remains an iconic landmark that gives the park its distinctive character. It's not just locally appreciated either - the tower is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (added in 1977) and is recognized as an American Water Landmark. Parents of little cyclists take note: the circular path around the tower makes a wonderful training ground for wobbly first bike rides.

What You'll Find There

Tower Park provides a peaceful break from city life with its various spaces. You can wander along walking trails that meander through green expanses, let the kids burn energy at the children's playground, enjoy lunch at the picnic areas, or catch a game at the sports fields.

The paths throughout are excellent for everything from contemplative strolls to morning jogs. There's also a lovely rain garden adding both beauty and environmental benefits to the landscape. If you're planning a small gathering, two gazebos - one larger and one more intimate - are available on a first-come basis (no reservations needed).

Get Active or Relax

Sports enthusiasts can head to the baseball field tucked into one corner of the park. The playground equipment might look familiar if you've visited other Kansas City parks, but it still provides plenty of climbing, sliding, and imaginary play opportunities for kids.

When nature calls, there's a bathhouse with restrooms, however keep in mind these are typically only open during summer months and occasionally might be locked. If you're planning to spend the day, you'll discover convenience stores nearby for any forgotten snacks or supplies.

Bring Your Four-Legged Friend

Your canine companion is welcome at Tower Park, although they'll need to stay leashed throughout your visit. The trails are popular with local dog walkers, making this a great spot to exercise both you and your pup.

Just remember to bring your own waste bags and water bowl, as the park doesn't offer dedicated dog amenities like waste stations or off-leash areas.

A Park With Purpose

It's worth noting that Tower Park exists today because local residents in the mid-20th century advocated to preserve this space for public use instead of housing development.

Today, the park functions as both a recreational space and a piece of local history. The grounds are home to family picnics, baseball games, and other activities. Many locals have been visiting for decades.
