About Jordan Valley Park
History and Development
Tucked in the heart of downtown Springfield, Jordan Valley Park is a 12-acre green haven at 635 E. Trafficway. Opened in 2002, this park emerged from Springfield's Vision 20/20 long-range plan and became a catalyst for downtown revival during the '90s and early 2000s.
It's hard to believe this serene space was once an industrial eyesore. Today, Jordan Valley Park features open plazas, gentle hills, playful features, picnic spots, and winding paths. What makes it special? The design reflects the collaborative vision of more than 300 community members who helped transform this former blighted area into something beautiful for everyone.
Water Features
A major attraction is the Ozarks Stream and Fountain, running from Memorial Day through Labor Day. If you're planning a visit during the season, you'll catch the fountain's 30-minute show every hour from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with non-stop splashing from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Kids absolutely love the fountain area, which doubles as a splash pad with varying water heights - some sections create bigger splashes while others offer gentler sprays. With water less than a foot deep, even the tiniest tots can safely splash around. Next to the main fountain, a waterfall creek flows into a surrounding pool, creating even more opportunities for cooling off on hot days.
A quick tip: consider wearing water shoes, as the cobblestone surface can be a bit uneven. And don't forget swimwear or a change of clothes if you've got little ones who can't resist the allure of water play!
Attractions and Amenities
Beyond the water features, the park houses some quirky attractions that give it character. There's the kinetic K-Man sculpture that moves with the wind, the nostalgic Springfield Wagon play area, and a climbing rock with safety surfacing below. Kids seem particularly drawn to the small but distinctive playground featuring a blue dinosaur sculpture.
When hunger strikes, head to the Rotary Picnic Area with its covered tables, or claim one of the many picnic spots scattered within the grounds. Some areas enjoy wonderful shade from mature trees, meant for escaping the summer heat. The Outdoor Classroom offers an interesting educational space nestled within the natural environment.
Restrooms are available, but you'll need to walk a short distance from the fountain area to reach them. The park welcomes visitors daily from 5 AM to 11 PM.
Events and Recreation
The outdoor amphitheater is a community hub that can host gatherings of 500+ people, making it great for concerts, festivals, and local events during the year.
If you're looking to extend your walk or run, the Jordan Valley Greenway connects to nearby Founders Park. The paved paths throughout Jordan Valley Park provide a peaceful urban escape and are popular with visitors of all ages. And yes, you can bring your four-legged friends - just keep them leashed and clean up after them.
Art Installations
Adding to the park's charm is its collection of sculpture installations, both temporary and permanent, created in partnership with Sculpture Walk Springfield. These artistic elements transform an ordinary stroll into something more meaningful, offering interesting photo opportunities and conversation starters as you wander the grounds.
The diverse sculptures scattered throughout the landscape add cultural interest, making each visit a bit different as you encounter these artistic touches.
