Swords Park

Scenic Location

Swords Park is a 60-acre urban park located in Billings, Montana. Situated atop the Rimrocks, a geological formation of sandstone cliffs, the park offers panoramic views of the city and the Yellowstone Valley.

The park was named after George Swords, who deeded the rimtop land to Billings in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Trail System

The park features a paved trail system known as the Swords Park Trail, which extends for approximately 2 miles within the park boundaries. This trail is part of a larger network that connects to other areas of Billings, offering opportunities for walking, jogging, and cycling.

The trail is well-maintained and accessible, making it suitable for users of various fitness levels and abilities.

Historical Significance

Swords Park is not only a recreational area but also a site of historical significance. Near the highest point of the park lies the grave of Yellowstone Kelly, a famous frontier scout.

The park also includes a segment called the Black Otter Trail, named in honor of a Crow Indian Chief who was laid to rest in the vicinity in 1861.

Natural Environment

The natural area of the park preserves the native landscape of the Rimrocks, providing visitors with a glimpse of the region's geological and ecological features. The undeveloped portions of the park serve as a habitat for local wildlife and plant species.
