About Veterans Park
A Green Oasis for Everyone
Located in the heart of Billings, Montana, Veterans Park spans 10 acres at the corner of 13th Street West and Poly Avenue. This welcoming green space is both a neighborhood hangout and a recreational area where locals and visitors alike can soak up some fresh air and enjoy a bit of nature within the city.
With its mix of wide-open lawns and developed recreational areas, the park strikes that perfect balance between active fun and peaceful relaxation. Whether you're looking to break a sweat or simply find a quiet spot under a tree, you'll find options for both.
More Than a Name
Veterans Park isn't just called that by chance - it stands near the site of a somber piece of local history. On December 8, 1945, a C-47 military transport plane carrying servicemen returning from World War II crashed in a nearby field, marking what would become the deadliest plane crash in Billings history.
The park honors this connection through thoughtful tributes to those who served. Take a moment to notice the trees lining the street, each dedicated to a WWII veteran with commemorative plaques at their bases. Don't miss the striking eagle monument that stands as a silent guardian of their memory.
Play Your Way
Fancy a game? The park's ballfields are fantastic for a casual softball match or organized baseball leagues when you're feeling competitive.
If you're looking for something a bit more laid-back, why not try your hand at the horseshoe courts? There's something wonderfully nostalgic about the clang of horseshoes on a sunny afternoon.
Kids will make a beeline for the playground area with its range of swings - including baby swings for the tiniest visitors and a particularly popular tire swing made of hard plastic that doesn't heat up in the summer sun (parents, you know what a blessing that is!). The playground features two separate structures tailored for different age groups, with wood chips below to cushion any tumbles.
When summer temperatures climb, the wading pool becomes the park's hotspot for splashing and cooling off. And when winter blankets Billings in snow, an ice skating rink transforms the park into a seasonal wonderland.
Get Moving or Take It Easy
Early morning joggers and evening strollers appreciate the unpaved jogging trails that meander through the grounds. There's something calming about the natural surface beneath your feet as you make your way through the park's peaceful landscape.
Gatherings big and small find their place at Veterans Park's numerous picnic sites. With around 12 movable tables plus permanent ones scattered throughout, you'll likely find a wonderful spot for your spread. The abundant barbecue grills make this an ideal spot for everything from impromptu lunches to well-planned family reunions - just bring your charcoal and favorite grill recipes.
Everything You Need
Planning a bigger event? The park's pavilion can be reserved for special occasions, offering shelter from both Montana's summer sun and unexpected showers.
Restroom facilities are available, although they require rental keys for access during special events. They're typically well-maintained - always a plus for a public park!
Dog owners will appreciate that four-legged friends are welcome here (on leash, of course), with plenty of room to explore together. On hot days, the mature trees cast generous shadows across the grounds, creating natural air conditioning that makes afternoon visits much more comfortable.
The Billings Department of Parks, Recreation & Public Lands keeps everything in shipshape condition year-round. The park welcomes visitors daily from 5 AM to 10 PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy all it has to offer.
