About the Location
Historic Origins
Established in 1889, Elmwood Park spans 216.4 acres, making it one of the largest parks in Omaha. The park was originally designed by prominent landscape architect Horace Cleveland as part of Omaha's comprehensive park and boulevard system.
The park was named for the impressive elm trees that once dominated its landscape. Throughout its history, Elmwood Park has served various purposes. In the early 20th century, it housed a popular spring where citizens would collect water, and later it included an auto tourist camp.
Natural Features
Elmwood Park features a diverse landscape of wooded areas, open fields, and a small waterway known as Spring Creek. This varied terrain provides visitors with different environments to explore and enjoy.
The park connects to the larger Omaha parks system through walking and biking trails, offering extended outdoor experiences for visitors.
Community Connections
The park is adjacent to the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus, providing a natural retreat for students and faculty.
Today, Elmwood Park continues to be a focal point for recreation and community gatherings in Omaha. The park hosts several events throughout the year, including the popular Shakespeare on the Green festival, which brings free outdoor theater performances to the community during the summer months.
