Park Overview

Located in downtown Omaha, Nebraska, Heartland of America Park spans 31 acres at 800 Douglas Street. As the largest of three interconnected parks forming The RiverFront, this recently renovated urban green space reopened in August 2023 after a major facelift. It's like finding a tranquil island in the middle of city life - a place where both locals and out-of-towners can catch their breath among beautifully maintained grounds.

Stunning Water Features

The park features a sprawling lake with three fountains, including a computerized fountain that shoots water 300 feet skyward - visible even from Iowa across the river!

Come nightfall, the fountain transforms into a gentle light show, slowly shifting colors against the evening backdrop. A paved trail wraps around the lake, fantastic for a casual stroll or your morning jog with a view. If you're lucky, you'll spot ducks and geese paddling around, adding a touch of wilderness to this city retreat.

Location and Views

Heartland of America Park connects Omaha's historic Old Market district with the Missouri River waterfront. The park offers excellent views of both the river and downtown, with generous green spaces where you can simply sprawl out and unwind.

History buffs will appreciate the thoughtful nods to the past, including a monument commemorating the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition and the lovingly restored Waterworks Fountain from the late 1800s, which once graced a North Omaha railroad depot.

Recreation Amenities

The recent renovation brought some exciting additions to the park. The Skate Ribbon at 8th and Farnam Street offers year-round skating - ice in winter, roller in summer - with affordable rental options if you didn't pack your skates.

You'll also find a lakeside amphitheater for performances, bocce courts for friendly competition, and the standout Farnam Pier extending over the Missouri River for those unbeatable waterfront and skyline views.

If you're visiting with kids, multiple playgrounds feature creative climbing structures, slides, and obstacle courses that keep children happily occupied. And in a fun twist, adult-sized swings and see-saws mean grown-ups don't have to just watch from the sidelines.

Relaxation Spaces

If you need to decompress, you'll find oversized hammocks scattered across the grounds - good for cloud-watching or afternoon naps. There's also plenty of seating strategically placed to catch the best views.

On cooler evenings, gather around the fire pits for warmth and conversation, or seek out the shaded areas during those hot Nebraska summer days. The thoughtful open design means you can always find your own little corner of calm, even on busier days.

Dog-Friendly Features

Your four-legged friends haven't been forgotten - the dedicated dog park separates areas for large and small dogs, complete with ramps, tunnels, and equipment for them to explore and play on.

Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the rest of the park, and you can find pet water fountains near the restrooms and convenient waste stations along the walking paths so you can clean up easily.

Accessibility and Community Use

Heartland of America Park was designed with everyone in mind, featuring wheelchair-friendly paths and amenities throughout. Clean family-style restrooms with changing stations are available in several locations.

The park hosts a variety of events including concerts, food festivals like Taste of Omaha, and seasonal celebrations. Even during popular events, there's typically enough space that it doesn't feel overcrowded.
