About the Location

Lake & Water Activities

At the heart of Sparks Marina Park lies the 77-acre Helms Lake, which has a pretty interesting origin story - it formed when a gravel pit filled with water during the 1997 floods. If you're into fishing, you're in luck; the Nevada Department of Wildlife keeps the lake stocked with fish throughout the year.

While you won't see any gas-powered boats zooming around (they're not allowed), the lake is great for electric motor boats and non-motorized watercraft. There are two sandy beaches along the shoreline where you can relax or take a refreshing dip during the warmer months. The calm waters make it an ideal spot for paddle boarding, kayaking, and windsurfing - activities that have become quite popular here.

Trails & Recreation

Fancy a walk with a view? The park features a 2-mile paved walking and biking trail that loops around the lake. It offers scenic views of the water and mountains in the background, making it popular with walkers, joggers, and cyclists.

Beyond the trail, you'll discover several recreational facilities scattered across the park. There are volleyball courts for the sporty types, playgrounds for the little ones, and picnic areas complete with tables and grills for those who prefer to relax and enjoy some food in the fresh air. The area is well-maintained, providing a nice environment for various outdoor activities.

Playgrounds & Family Areas

Kids will love the newly updated, fenced playground with its modern equipment designed for children of all abilities. The inclusive playground features a variety of interactive elements - swings, xylophones, climbing structures - with special features that accommodate children with different mobility needs.

Safety is clearly a priority here, with rubber mat surfacing throughout the playground. The area is thoughtfully divided into sections for different age groups, so smaller children have their own space separate from the older kids. Parents appreciate the enclosed design that makes it easier to keep an eye on the little adventurers while they play.

Dog Park & Pet-Friendly Areas

The park includes a fenced dog park where dogs can run free off-leash. During warmer months, dogs can even cool off with a swim in the designated water access area. The entire marina walking path welcomes pets too, making this a go-to destination for dog walkers.

You'll notice plenty of pet waste stations across the park - a thoughtful touch that helps keep the grounds clean and enjoyable for everyone.

Veterans Memorial Plaza

Take a moment to visit the Veterans Memorial Plaza, a thoughtfully designed space honoring those who have served. The memorial features stone engravings, monuments, and educational displays about American history and the armed forces.

It's a powerful and moving tribute - a quiet place for reflection that many find deeply meaningful during their visit to the park.

Amenities & Accessibility

You'll discover clean, well-maintained restrooms at various points around the marina, and the paved paths throughout make the park accessible for wheelchairs. If you're visiting during summer, you can grab a cold drink or snack at the seasonal snack bar.

The park's convenient location near shopping centers and major roads makes it easily accessible whether you're a local or just passing through the Reno-Sparks area.

Special Events

The 109-acre public park occasionally hosts special events all year long, from art fairs to community gatherings that bring people together.

On weekends and during summer months, you might stumble upon food trucks, ice cream vendors, and various activities that add to the park's appeal. The park provides a mix of recreational opportunities and natural space within the urban environment.
