About the Location

A Historic Green Space

Derryfield Park is a sprawling 76-acre public park located in Manchester, New Hampshire. Situated on Bridge Street on the east side of the city, this expansive green space offers a variety of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

The park has a rich history dating back to the 1700s and early 1800s when the land was claimed by the town of Derry and likely used as pasture for cattle. After Derry separated into two towns in 1827, the land became part of Manchester and has since remained a popular recreational area.

Historic Landmark

One of the park's notable features is the Weston Observatory, a 66-foot tall structure built between 1896 and 1897. Named after former mayor James A. Weston, who left funds for its construction, the observatory is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Although the tower is now locked, visitors can still admire this historic landmark from the outside.

Recreation Opportunities

Derryfield Park is particularly known for its challenging cross-country course, which hosts annual meets and is considered one of the more difficult courses in New England. The park's extensive trail network provides opportunities for hiking and nature observation.

Sports enthusiasts will find multiple fields used by various teams and leagues, including Trinity High School's home fields, slow pitch softball teams, a Pony baseball league, and the East Cobras football league. The park also features tennis courts for those who enjoy racquet sports.

Family-Friendly Features

For families and younger visitors, Derryfield Park offers a playground area, providing a space for children to play and explore. The park's mix of open fields, wooded areas, and recreational facilities makes it a versatile space catering to a wide range of interests and activities.
