About Roosevelt Park
A Piece of History
Tucked away in Edison, New Jersey, Roosevelt Park is the oldest member of the Middlesex County Park System, dating all the way back to 1917. Spanning 217 acres of greenery, it's like stumbling upon a miniature version of NYC's Central Park - a refreshing escape from the surrounding development.
Water, Wildlife & Wandering
At the heart of Roosevelt Park lies an eight-acre lake stocked with fish by the State of New Jersey. On any given day, you'll spot folks casting lines or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll along the paved pathway circling the water. The lake doubles as a sanctuary for ducks and swans, adding a touch of natural tranquility to your visit.

Beyond the water, the park unfolds with sports fields, picnic areas, playgrounds, and miles of trails to explore. Tennis players particularly appreciate the multiple courts available - some even lit for those evening matches when you just can't call it quits before sunset.
Standing Out in the Landscape
The Middlesex County Veterans Memorial, unveiled on Veterans Day in November 2001, is built around eight large concrete walls - six representing the individual military branches, and two carrying dedications and tributes to the county's veterans - along with a fountain and accompanying sculptures. It won the 39th Annual New Jersey Concrete Awards and offers a quiet space for reflection amid the park's activity.
Art enthusiasts shouldn't miss the fountain sculpture "Light Dispelling Darkness." Designed by sculptor Waylande Gregory under a WPA commission and unveiled in 1938, it stands 15 feet tall and spans 40 feet in diameter. Six sculptural groups surround the fountain, each representing a symbolic force - War, Pestilence, Famine, Death, Greed, and Materialism - overcome by the light of knowledge and science. That theme was directly inspired by the park's proximity to Menlo Park, where Thomas Edison developed the incandescent light bulb. The fountain fell into disrepair over the decades but was fully restored in 2004.

Near the corner of Lafayette Avenue and US Route 1 North, a bronze statue known as "Iron Mike" honors the Civilian Conservation Corps workers who helped build and shape Roosevelt Park. The figure depicts a typical CCC laborer holding a spade, serving as a straightforward tribute to the Depression-era program that left a lasting mark on the park's landscape.

Changing with the Seasons
Roosevelt Park knows how to keep things interesting year-round. Summer brings outdoor entertainment with "Plays in the Park" and "Music in the Park" - fantastic for families looking to enjoy performances under open skies.
When winter rolls in, the park transforms with an ice skating rink becoming the center of attention. Whether you're wobbly on skates or gracefully gliding, it's a wonderful way to embrace the colder months.
Gathering Under the Trees
Scattered within the park are numerous picnic groves complete with tables and grills. These spots are ideal for everything from impromptu lunches to planned family reunions. Larger gatherings can reserve certain areas in advance, while smaller groups can simply claim available spaces as they arrive.
The mature trees provide generous shade, creating comfortable retreats for relaxation and outdoor meals. And don't worry about convenience - restroom facilities are thoughtfully placed around the grounds.
Everyone's Welcome
Inclusion is part of Roosevelt Park's character, with "The Level Playing Fields" specifically designed for visitors with physical and other special needs. The park also proudly forms part of the East Coast Greenway, that impressive 3,000-mile trail system connecting Maine to Florida.
Dog lovers can bring their four-legged friends along (just remember to keep them leashed). With plenty of parking available, accessing all this greenspace is hassle-free whether you're from Edison or just passing through.
