About the Location

A Piece of American History

Tucked away at the corner of Grand and Washington Streets in Jersey City, Paulus Hook Park is a little green space with a big story to tell. This quaint space, split into four "pocket parks," sits in the heart of the Paulus Hook Historic District and was once envisioned as a grand public square on the early 1800s Mangin Map.

What you're standing on has quite the tale - from humble beginnings as a tidal swamp to becoming a crucial piece of Jersey City's historical puzzle.

Revolutionary Roots

If these grounds could talk! During the Revolutionary War, this elevated spot wasn't just another patch of land - it was home to a British fort that became the stage for the Battle of Paulus Hook in 1779. Picture it: Major Henry "Light Horse" Harry Lee leading a bold midnight raid to capture British soldiers. Pretty impressive, right?

Before that famous battle, the area hosted the "Flying Camp" - soldiers dedicated to protecting New Jersey from British advances. To honor this piece of revolutionary history, the Daughters of the American Revolution placed an obelisk monument here in 1903, later replaced with a new one in 1985.

From Past to Present

As the 19th century rolled on, the Paulus Hook neighborhood flourished thanks to its prime location near waterfront, canals, and railroads. Back then, maps labeled this green space as Washington Square Park - a bit of trivia for your next visit!

The 1970s brought renovations including fencing and gates to protect the park during some challenging years for the neighborhood. In 1976, as America celebrated its 200th birthday, a magnificent Northern Red Oak - officially a Liberty Tree - was planted here, adding natural beauty to this historical ground.

A Neighborhood Favorite

Today, Paulus Hook Park represents community care and historical preservation. The Historic Paulus Hook Association (HPHA) maintains the space with help from the Exchange Place Alliance, which has added some nice touches like children's play equipment.

Small but mighty, this park offers a peaceful retreat from city life and has become especially popular with local dog walkers. Whether you're a history buff or just need a quiet moment on a bench, this green space offers both tranquility and a connection to the past.
