About the Location
A Place of Remembrance
Located on Auburn Street in Paterson, MLK Park is a thoughtful tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This green space, opened in August 2019, sits directly across from the Community Baptist Church of Love, where Dr. King delivered one of his final speeches just one week before his assassination in 1968. There's something poignant about being able to stand in a place so connected to such a momentous figure in American history.
Standing Tall in Bronze
The heart of the park features an impressive eight-foot bronze statue of Dr. King created by the talented artist Stan Watts. As you approach the statue, you can't help but feel a sense of reverence. It's not just artwork - it's a powerful reminder of Dr. King's enduring influence on civil rights in America.
Walking through the park, you'll discover "A Wall that Brings People Together" - a thoughtful installation where paving stones bear Dr. King's most inspiring quotes. It's a place that invites you to pause, read, and reflect on his messages of equality, justice, and peace. Sometimes, in our busy lives, we need these moments of contemplation.
Where Community Comes Together
More than just a memorial, this park functions as a gathering space for the community. From civil rights educational events to commemorative ceremonies, the park hosts various community activities. Situated in Paterson - a city with a diverse population and rich history - MLK Park connects the city's present to a pivotal moment in its past.
