About the Location

A Breath of Nature in the City

Located along Isleta Boulevard in Albuquerque's South Valley, Durand Open Space provides a little glimpse of tranquility amid the urban landscape. This peaceful spot - sometimes affectionately called "P Patch" by locals - has quite the history, having previously been both an alfalfa farm and a landing strip for small aircraft.

The heart of the park is its gentle 0.6-mile loop trail (about 1267 steps if you're counting). With its well-maintained, flat terrain, it's perfect whether you're squeezing in your daily exercise or just out for a leisurely wander. As you make your way around, you'll pass by agricultural fields and an acequia - a traditional irrigation ditch that speaks to the area's farming roots.

Feathered Friends and Wildlife Encounters

If you're into bird watching, this is a good place to visit. Durand is known for its variety of birds. Fall brings visits from majestic Sandhill cranes and Canadian geese, while the nearby Rio Grande and Bosque woodland ensure a diverse cast of avian characters year-round.

If you're visiting with kids, watch for the smaller residents - frogs and lizards appear regularly, and occasionally, you might spot a fox. It's a nice opportunity to see wildlife within city limits.

Finding Your Path

You've got options for exploration here. Loop around the old airfield near the entrance, take an easy stroll alongside the irrigation ditch, or head down to the Bosque trail that runs along the Rio Grande. To find the Bosque trail from the parking lot, just head straight across the paved arroyo section, cross the ditch path, and make your way down to the left (northward).

The river trail creates a natural loop - part winding through wooded areas, part hugging the river more closely. Several side paths offer access points to the river itself, making this section of the Bosque particularly worth exploring.

What to Know Before You Go

While there aren't any restrooms here (plan accordingly!), you will find some benches and picnic tables scattered throughout - perfect spots to rest and take in the scenery. Historical markers provide interesting context about the area, and there's even a wooden sculpture, but unfortunately it hasn't entirely escaped vandalism.

The park never closes - it's open 24/7 with plenty of parking. Many regulars prefer visiting at dawn or dusk when the lighting is particularly nice. It's a peaceful retreat from city life that's conveniently located within the city.

Beyond the Boundaries

From Durand, you can easily access the Rio Grande and Bosque, expanding your outdoor adventure if you're feeling ambitious. The property falls under the care of Bernalillo County Open Space, which manages several such areas to preserve natural habitats while keeping them accessible to the public.

One of the nicest things about Durand? It rarely gets crowded. No matter if you're walking your dog, seeking a quiet spot for meditation, planning a family outing, or just wanting to read a book surrounded by nature's soundtrack, you'll likely find the peace you're looking for here.
