About the Location

A Repurposed Urban Space

The Albany Skyway is an elevated linear park in Albany, New York that opened in April 2022. It was created by repurposing an underutilized exit ramp from northbound Interstate 787, transforming it into a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly green space.

Spanning approximately half a mile in length, the Skyway connects downtown Albany to the Hudson River waterfront, providing easy access to the Corning Riverfront Park and the Mohawk Hudson Hike Bike Trail. The park is fully accessible and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Features and Amenities

The Skyway features landscaped areas with plantings along the path, offering a green contrast to the surrounding urban environment. It includes seating areas for visitors to rest and enjoy views of the Hudson River and the city skyline.

Near the Broadway entrance, there is a shade structure for protection from the elements. One of the notable features of the Skyway is its amphitheater-style seating, which provides a space for relaxation with panoramic views of the Hudson River.

The park also incorporates pedestrian lighting to ensure safety and usability during evening hours.

Community Impact

The project aims to boost recreational opportunities in the area while furthering tourism and economic activity in the Capital Region.

It serves as a unique example of adaptive reuse, turning former vehicular infrastructure into a public amenity that promotes non-motorized transportation and community connection.
