About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Located along the Niagara River, Black Rock Canal Park offers some pretty spectacular waterfront views. It's actually a relatively young park in its current form - what used to be Cornelius Creek and the Ontario Street Boat Launch was merged into this single riverside park back in May 2013.
Paths to Wander
A smooth, paved trail hugs the riverbank, great for a leisurely stroll, morning jog, or bike ride with the water as your constant companion. The park isn't an isolated location either - it's connected to Buffalo's growing network of waterfront parks via the Shoreline Trail.
Just a heads-up if you're visiting: the Shoreline Trail bike path cuts through the parking lot without any specific lanes marked out. If you're on two wheels or four, keeping an eye out for each other makes everyone's visit more enjoyable.
Those River Views Though
If you're looking for a good sunset spot in Buffalo, this might be it. Many locals consider Black Rock Canal Park one of the city's best places to watch the sun dip below the horizon, painting the Niagara River in golden hues.
There's also a piece of local history on display - a sample of the rock formation that gave Black Rock its name. Interestingly, the actual historic formation was located closer to the Peace Bridge and is more dark grey than truly black, but it's a nice touch that connects the park to its regional roots.
On the Water
The park features a free boat launch, making the Niagara River accessible for boaters and jet ski enthusiasts alike. There's even a natural advantage here - the current along this stretch of shore actually flows upstream, giving you better control when launching your vessel.
Fishing enthusiasts can also cast a line into the river, however be prepared to deal with seaweed in some areas depending on the season.
For the Four-Legged Friends
Dog owners will appreciate that The park features the Bark Park, a dedicated off-leash area where your furry companions can run free. It's thoughtfully divided into two sections - one for smaller pups (30 pounds or less) and another for the bigger dogs.
The Bark Park operates with specific rules and hours to keep things safe and pleasant for everyone. You'll come across it just over the walking bridge south of the main entrance.
Finding Your Way Around
The park sits snugly between Interstate 190 and the Niagara River, with a single entrance through an underpass beneath the highway. Most visitors park in the northern lot, but there's a smaller parking area near the boat launch at the entrance.
When exploring the northern section, don't miss the Avian Walk with its artistic wireframe sculptures depicting birds native to the region. Within the park, you'll find benches perfectly positioned for taking in those peaceful river moments.
For practical matters, portable restroom facilities are available across the street from the main park area.
