About Albert Capsouto Park
A Triangle of Tranquility in Tribeca
Positioned in the bustling streets of Tribeca in Lower Manhattan, Albert Capsouto Park is a triangular pocket of calm amid the busy streets of Manhattan. This little green space is neatly wedged between Canal Street, Varick Street, and Laight Street, offering a moment to breathe when the New York pace becomes overwhelming.
From Parking Lot to Paradise
Before becoming the charming spot it is today, this space was just another Manhattan parking lot. Transformed in November 2009 with a price tag of about $3.4 million, the park's history took a profound turn after the September 11, 2001 attacks, when it served as a staging ground for search and rescue teams.
In those difficult weeks, the site spontaneously evolved into a place of remembrance, with New Yorkers leaving flowers, cards, and heartfelt messages - one of the closest places people could access to pay respects to those lost at the World Trade Center.
Water and Wonder
The heart of the park is its stunning 114-foot fountain, created by local artist Elyn Zimmerman. More than just a pretty water feature, it's a thoughtful nod to the canal that once flowed where Canal Street now runs. The fountain's gentle sounds provide a soothing soundtrack that somehow manages to muffle the city's constant hum.
This thoughtful design didn't go unnoticed - in 2007, it received recognition for Excellence in Design from the New York City Public Design Commission.

A Name With Meaning
The park was initially called CaVaLa Park (a clever acronym of Canal, Varick, and Laight streets), but found its permanent identity in 2010 when it was renamed to honor Albert Capsouto.
Capsouto wasn't just any local - he was a treasured Tribeca restaurateur who rolled up his sleeves after 9/11 to help rebuild the neighborhood's spirit and economy. As a twenty-year member of Community Board 1, his dedication to the area was unwavering until his passing in January 2010.
A Peaceful Spot in Lower Manhattan
Today, this small triangle of greenery serves locals and visitors alike. It's where people grab a quick lunch break, rest their feet, and find a moment of peace within the city's constant motion - while honoring the memory of a dedicated community member.
