About Clove Lakes Park
Park History
Clove Lakes Park got its name from the Dutch word "kloven," meaning cleft - a fitting description for the valley and brook nestled between Emerson and Grymes Hills. About 20,000 years ago, glaciers came through and deepened this valley, shaping the landscape we see today.
Before becoming the park we know now, this area had a more industrial past. The 19th century saw mills and an ice house operating here. It wasn't until the 1920s that the city acquired the land as a park, with most of the major construction happening in the early 1930s.
Natural Features
Spanning 198 acres, the park features a chain of connected lakes and ponds. Brooks Lake, Martling Pond, and Clove Lake formed over time as Clove Brook was gradually dammed. These peaceful waters not only create stunning views but also provide homes for all sorts of creatures.
The park is home to some remarkable trees. Staten Island's largest living organism lives right here - a magnificent tulip tree towering 119 feet tall and believed to be at least 300 years old. You can find this gentle giant just inside the park near where Clove Road meets Forest Avenue.
The wildlife in the park is varied. On any given day, you might spot turtles sunning themselves on rocks, wild turkeys strutting about, or various waterfowl like geese, ducks, herons, and elegant egrets. The lakes teem with fish, including black crappie, brown bullhead, largemouth bass, and carp.
Geology
For the geology buffs, the park showcases fascinating outcroppings of serpentine rocks. These form part of a broad serpentine ridge that essentially creates Staten Island's backbone. Dating back to the Ordovician period, these distinctive rocks display an ash-green color with patterns reminiscent of snake skin - hence the name.

Recreation and Activities
Feel like stretching your legs? About three miles of hiking trails wind through lush forests and around the lakes. There are paved walking paths excellent for strollers or your morning jog, as well as more rugged gravel trails if you're up for a bit more adventure.
Kids have plenty of space to play in the park's multiple playgrounds. During summer, one playground features water sprinklers - an ideal cool-down on hot days. Sports enthusiasts haven't been forgotten either, with basketball courts, baseball fields, and open grassy areas ideal for soccer, football, or just tossing a frisbee around.
When summer rolls around, visitors can take to the water by renting rowboats and paddleboats to explore the lakes from a different perspective. There's a convenient snack bar near the boat rental area when hunger strikes. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck in the lakes, however catch-and-release is encouraged to preserve the ecosystem.
Amenities
Planning a gathering? The park offers numerous picnic areas with tables scattered throughout, plus designated BBQ areas tucked away in wooded sections. For larger groups, these spaces can be reserved with a permit.
Restrooms are strategically located around the park, mainly near playgrounds and sports facilities. They're generally well-maintained, however hours may be limited during certain seasons.
Dog owners, rejoice! The park is dog-friendly, so your leashed four-legged friends can enjoy the trails alongside you. You'll find waste disposal stations around the park to help keep things clean.
For a more upscale experience, check out the Stone House - a restaurant perched on the lake offering fine dining with beautiful views and outdoor deck seating.
Today, Clove Lakes Park offers a peaceful setting with picturesque scenery. Many locals consider it Staten Island's answer to Central Park.
