Haffen Park

History and Location

Nestled between Burke, Ely, Hammersley, and Gunther Avenues in the Bronx, Haffen Park spreads across several blocks of green space. The park bears the name of Louis F. Haffen, who served as the first Borough President of the Bronx. The city acquired this land in 1958, officially christening it Haffen Park the following year.

Recent Improvements

The park leveled up significantly in 2006 with a $1.2 million reconstruction project. The centerpiece of this renovation was a versatile synthetic turf field that accommodates both baseball and soccer, complete with a refurbished ballfield fence.

The upgrade also brought practical improvements like new drinking fountains, additional benches, better drainage, tree maintenance, and fresh plantings. That said, some areas of the park could still use a little TLC in future renovation phases.

Swimming Facilities

At the northern end of the park, you'll find a large swimming pool alongside a wading pool that's ideal for younger visitors. These pools are particularly popular during hot New York summer days.

The pool area maintains good standards of cleanliness and safety, however you'll want to check seasonal opening hours before planning your visit.

The park's bandshell hosts performances from local artists, rappers, and poets, especially during holiday weekends like Memorial Day.
