About the Location
Where History Meets Nature
Tucked just outside Rochester, NY, Greece Canal Park spans 577 acres of green space alongside the Erie Canal. This spacious park combines historical elements with natural areas, providing a quiet retreat from city life near a piece of New York's canal heritage.
Trails to Explore
The park features four main trails, each under 1.5 miles long, making them great for casual strolls or quick nature breaks. Regardless of whether you're wandering the Deer Run, Canal Trail, West Trail, or Farm Artifact Trail, you'll find mostly level terrain that's accessible for almost everyone.
If you follow the Deer Run trail, you'll discover a lovely observation point overlooking a pond fringed with cattails - a wonderful spot for a quick photo or moment of reflection.
The park has recently upgraded several bridges along the trails, and many paths connect to the main Canal Path, giving you options to extend your adventure if you're in the mood for a longer walk, run, or bike ride.
Get Your Game On
Not just for nature lovers, Greece Canal Park comes equipped with several athletic facilities. You can challenge friends to a match on the tennis courts (which double as pickleball courts), organize a game on the softball diamond, or kick a ball around the soccer field.
Families will appreciate the two playgrounds where kids can burn off energy, while the open grassy areas provide plenty of space for frisbee, catch, or just lounging on a blanket with a good book.
Puppy Paradise
Dog owners - this park features one of only two off-leash dog parks in the entire Monroe County Park system. Here your four-legged friend can run free and socialize with other dogs. Beyond the dedicated dog area, you'll often see people walking their leashed pets along the canal access areas and paved roads across the park.
Gather & Celebrate
Scattered around the grounds are numerous picnic spots complete with tables and grills - ideal for everything from intimate family lunches to larger cookouts. Planning something bigger? You can reserve the Millennium Lodge or the Towpath Shelter for special events and gatherings.
Seasonal Fun
When winter blankets the landscape, the park transforms into a different kind of playground. Depending on snow conditions, you can strap on cross-country skis or snowshoes to experience the trails from a whole new perspective.
Practical Matters
You can find two restroom facilities in the park. The ones at Millennium Lodge are accessible from both inside and outside and remain open year-round during park hours, while the facilities near Towpath Shelter are seasonal. Getting around is easier now too, thanks to the partial repaving of park roads completed in 2022.
Overnight Adventures
The park includes a youth camping area, but it's worth noting that this space is reservation-only and primarily intended for scout troops and youth groups rather than individual campers.
