About the Location
Park Overview
Tucked between Harrison Avenue and Chapel Hill Road, Robert V. Godbold Park is a versatile recreational space that offers activities for a wide range of visitors. Whether you're a parent with energetic kids, a tennis enthusiast, or someone looking to let your dog run off-leash, this park has options for you.
One thing we really appreciate about this park is its thoughtful layout - multiple parking lots are strategically placed so you can park close to wherever you're headed, saving you from that long trek across the grounds with all your gear (or impatient children).
The whole place is impressively clean and well-kept, making it a peaceful spot to spend a few hours away from the hustle and bustle.
Playground Paradise
The playground features a large jungle gym set on mulch that's gentle on little knees. For the tiny adventurers, there are shorter steps leading to smaller slides connected by a tunnel, while the more daring kids can tackle the challenging steps up to the bigger slide.
Little climbers will love the climbing structures, fireman pole, and monkey bars. With two bucket swings for toddlers and two regular swings for the bigger kids, it's particularly fantastic for the 2-8 age group.
Parents, you'll be relieved to know there are clean restrooms right by the playground - a small but mighty convenience when you're out with small children!
Sports Central
The park has six lighted tennis courts that operate on a first-come, first-served basis when not being used for Town of Cary programs. If you're looking to play after work, courts often free up after 7 PM. And yes, these courts work great for pickleball too, if that's more your speed.
Basketball enthusiasts haven't been forgotten - there are two lighted basketball slabs waiting for your next pickup game or solo practice session.
When you need a break, picnic tables near both the playground and basketball courts offer an excellent spot to refuel, and there's even a gazebo by the tennis courts where you can catch your breath in the shade.
Pup-Approved Play Area
The off-leash dog park requires a membership, but it's worth it if you're a regular. It's thoughtfully divided into areas for large and small dogs, with the large dog section being particularly spacious - plenty of room for your big furry friend to really stretch those legs.
The amenities here are solid: water for dogs, comfortable seating for humans, and waste bags for the inevitable cleanup. While it's generally well-maintained, be prepared for the occasional negligent owner who doesn't pick up after their pet.
Keep an eye out for the whimsically painted fire hydrants near the dog area - a cute touch that adds character to the space.
Trails Worth Exploring
If you're itching for a longer adventure, the park connects to the Black Creek Greenway and the Northwoods Greenway. These connections make Godbold Park an ideal jumping-off point for extended walks, runs, or bike rides - you can even make your way all the way to Umstead Park and Durham if you're feeling particularly ambitious.
The trails weave through pleasant wooded areas, offering a more natural experience alongside the park's structured amenities.
For the Thrill-Seekers
The Sk8-Cary Skate Park (also known as Cary Action Sports Park) is definitely a highlight if you're into skateboarding. This renovated extreme sports area draws skaters of all ages and skill levels. Just note that the operating hours can be somewhat limited, so you might want to check before heading over with your board.
Practical Stuff
The very clean restrooms here are available until 10 PM daily. Many locals consider these among the best-maintained park facilities in the area.
The park is open from 6 AM to 10 PM seven days a week, giving you plenty of time to enjoy everything it has to offer, whether you're an early bird or prefer evening recreation.
A Bit of History
The park pays tribute to Robert V. Godbold, a dedicated community leader who served on the Cary Town Council for 18 years. Beyond his council work, he was actively involved in various aspects of community life, including the Cary Volunteer Fire Department - a fitting namesake for a place that brings so many people together.
