About the Location

Play Area Paradise

The heart of Indian Trail Park is its shaded playground - a rare gem among Durham's parks - built back in June 2017. If you've ever had to comfort a toddler with scorched hands after touching sun-baked metal equipment, you'll appreciate this thoughtful feature!

Kids aged 2-12 will find plenty to keep them entertained, from a modern see-saw (nothing like the spine-jarring ones from the past) to a fun multi-child spinner ideal for group play. The swing set includes standard swings for the purists, plus a basket swing that's accessible for children of different ages and abilities.

Trails for Days

Need to stretch your legs? Indian Trail connects directly to the West Ellerbee Creek Trail, a smooth paved greenway that links into Durham's broader trail network. There are strength training exercise stations dotted along the path - essentially a free outdoor gym you can use during your walk.

The paved paths work well for power walking, jogging, or leisurely strolls. For those who prefer their nature a bit more wild, clearly marked nature trails offer a more rustic alternative.

Just a heads-up that there's a bridge section that occasionally closes for maintenance. The trails also connect to another smaller park off Guess Road if you're feeling adventurous and want to extend your outdoor time.

Natural Beauty

In 2016, the park got a bit of help with its landscaping from some four-legged friends - goats were brought in to clear about 3/4 of an acre of unwanted brush and invasive species. Besides being adorable, these natural landscapers improved visibility between the playground and parking lot.

Sprawling lawns provide perfect spots for picnicking or simply lounging with a good book. The mature trees scattered throughout create generous pockets of shade, making even summer visits comfortable. Keep your eyes peeled for local birds and wildlife that call this urban green space home - they add a peaceful soundtrack to your visit.
