About the Location
Recreational Facilities
Southern Boundaries Park offers plenty of options for sports lovers. The park features eight tennis courts that have been freshly resurfaced, suitable for both casual play and more competitive matches. If baseball's more your speed, you'll find two youth baseball/softball fields where future MVPs can practice their skills. And for basketball enthusiasts, three courts stand ready for pickup games or practicing those three-pointers. Tennis players have recently discovered these courts make an excellent venue for pickleball too!
Not feeling competitive today? No problem. The park's greenways and trails offer a more laid-back alternative. You can stroll or jog through natural surroundings on paths extending about 2.5 miles before hitting a road crossing. Ambitious walkers can connect all the way to South Roxboro Street for a satisfying 6-mile round trip. For those looking to simply relax and refuel, several picnic areas dot the landscape, excellent for family gatherings or catching up with friends over lunch.
Amenities and Features
You can find all the essentials here, including clean restroom facilities and water fountains to keep you hydrated. The grounds are well-maintained throughout the seasons, and field lights illuminate evening activities. Though a heads up for tennis players - the court lighting could be better for nighttime matches.
There's art in unexpected places here, too. In 2017, artists Julia Gartrell and Julienne Alexander transformed the bathroom and storage building with a vibrant mural. What makes this artwork special is that it wasn't created in isolation - community members contributed ideas, and the artists incorporated silhouettes of local residents into the final design, adding a personal touch to the park landscape.
Events and Activities
Southern Boundaries hosts various community activities. Every Saturday morning at 8:00 AM, early risers join the Durham ParkRun, a free 5k that welcomes runners and walkers of all abilities. Year-round, the versatile spaces here host everything from community gatherings to back-to-school events and family fun days, bringing neighbors together in this shared green space.
Location and Setting
Spread across 29.7 acres in South Durham, North Carolina, this park sits at a sweet spot where suburban life meets natural woodlands. This unique positioning creates a tranquil atmosphere where you can feel close to nature while still being within city limits. On hot summer days, you'll appreciate the shaded areas, while the mix of open fields and wooded sections provides diverse environments for all sorts of activities.
Trail Experience
The trails here are mainly paved, interspersed with several wooden bridges that add character to your walk. Note that during winter months, these bridges can get icy, so tread carefully. What makes these paths interesting is how they wind through a variety of settings - residential neighborhoods, natural areas, and business districts - creating an ever-changing backdrop for your walk or run. Dogs are welcome trail companions but must be leashed, and remember to bring bags to clean up after your four-legged friends.
