Situated in the Northside area of Wilmington, North Carolina, Portia Hines Park (also known by locals as 10th St. Park) offers a refreshing 2.78 acres of community green space. The park strikes that perfect balance between sunny spots for soaking up some vitamin D and shaded areas for when you need a break from the North Carolina heat.

Facilities and Amenities

Kids will light up at the sight of the modern playground that's thoughtfully designed for various age groups - no more "I'm too big/small for this" complaints! Beyond the playground, there's plenty of open space for impromptu games of tag or catch.

If you're looking to play some basketball, the park has a basketball court. Recent Improvements

Portia Hines Park underwent significant renovations recently. In 2021, the City of Wilmington gave the green light to a substantial improvement project.

The park now boasts a new pavilion, clean bathrooms, improved lighting, accessible sidewalks, and a dedicated parking lot. These upgrades cost the city $643,758, with an additional $57,900 set aside as contingency for the neighborhood park.

Community Involvement

This park's story has a grassroots chapter. Back in 2018, the Blue Ribbon Commission's Voyage Youth Leadership Council - a local youth group with vision - spoke up about how the park had been passed over for improvements in previous funding rounds. Their advocacy helped spark the transformation we see today.

Events and Activities

Portia Hines Park offers more than just scenery - it's an active gathering place for the community. In 2024, the park announced it would host free family-friendly movie screenings in the fall - great for budget-friendly entertainment under the stars.

These film nights come courtesy of several local organizations working together: the Northside Food Co-op, Cucalorus Film Foundation, Wilson Center, the City of Wilmington, and DREAMS Center for Arts Education.

Saturday mornings bring the local farmers market to the park, where you can stock up on fresh veggies and treats while supporting local growers. Beyond these regular events, the park represents a gathering spot for community celebrations all year long, adding to the neighborhood's sense of connection.
