About the Location
Historic Legacy
Fannie M. Lewis Community Park is located in Cleveland, Ohio, at the site of the historic League Park. The park is named after Fannie M. Lewis, a long-serving Cleveland city councilwoman who advocated for the restoration of League Park.
The park encompasses the renovated remains of League Park, which was once home to the Cleveland Indians baseball team. In 2014, the site was restored and reopened as a public park and recreational space.
Preserved Features
The renovation preserved some of the original features of League Park, including a portion of the brick wall along the first-base line and the ticket office. At the heart of the park is a baseball field built to the exact dimensions of the original League Park.
This field serves as a reminder of the site's rich baseball history while providing a modern space for community use.
Baseball Heritage Museum
The park also features a small museum, the Baseball Heritage Museum, housed in the restored ticket office building. This museum showcases artifacts and exhibits related to baseball history, with a particular focus on the Negro Leagues and women in baseball.
Community Space
The park serves as a community gathering space, offering recreational opportunities and green space in Cleveland's Hough neighborhood. It stands as a tribute to both the city's baseball legacy and Councilwoman Lewis's efforts to revitalize the area.
