About Helen Simpson Park in Cleveland
Helen Simpson Park is a community green space located in Cleveland's Buckeye neighborhood. The park, which covers 32,000 square feet, serves as a vital gathering place for local residents. It is situated at the intersection of South Woodland Road and South Moreland Boulevard in the northeast corner.
The park is named after Helen Simpson, a neighborhood resident who was a pioneer in Cleveland television. Simpson worked as a manager of advertising, promotion, and publicity at the local NBC affiliate. Tragically, she was murdered in 1972 while on her way home from work, and her case remains unsolved to this day.
In June 2022, Helen Simpson Park underwent a significant renovation as part of Project EverGreen's GreenCare for Communities initiative. The project, valued at $25,000, involved more than 30 professional volunteers who worked to enhance the park's aesthetics, vibrancy, and accessibility. The renovation included pruning and shaping existing trees, removing dead limbs and branches, addressing turf issues, and adding new trees and shrubs to increase carbon sequestration.
The park's revitalization efforts also focused on creating new attractive entryways and improving the overall landscaping. These enhancements were designed to provide a more welcoming environment for community members and to help the park function as "the lungs of the city" by offsetting the negative effects of a warming environment.
